The morning sun glints off Jerusalem’s walls as Absalom stations himself beside the city gate. With calculated charm he intercepts each petitioner meant for King David, taking them aside—“Your case is good and right, but there is no man deputed by the king to hear you.” So he kisses hands, whispers promises, and “steals the hearts of the men of Israel” (2 Samuel 15:1‑6). David still sits upon the throne, yet a hidden network now bends public loyalty toward Absalom’s silent coup.
Like a virus beneath the skin, the conspiracy grows unseen until, one midnight, David’s own capital erupts against him.
Could the same drama be unfolding around us?
Who truly wields the levers of modern power in the United States despite the changing of administrations every four to eight years?
And how should the people of God respond when unseen forces subvert righteous rule?
The story of Absalom is more than ancient history; it is a parable for every age in which a lawful king is undermined by stay‑behind operators who swear allegiance to something other than the kingdom they inhabit. In biblical days these agents worked the city gate; today they occupy cubicles, hearing rooms, and server farms. Their banner is Babylon—the archetypal power that exalts human empire above divine authority.

Babylon’s Silent Siege: Defining the Deep State
Modern commentators call it the Deep State—an entrenched cadre of bureaucrats, lobbyists, and judges who outlast elections and frustrate constitutional government. Scholars note that the term describes “a clandestine network of conspirators within the leadership of federal agencies” who exercise power alongside or above elected officials.1
Like Babylon of old, this hidden kingdom operates behind palace walls, manipulating policy through regulation, classified memos, and selective prosecutions while the electorate mostly stays unaware. The Deep State is not a single cabal; it is a culture, a self‑protecting organism that spans parties and decades. It has but one goal: the destruction of the American system of constitutional self‑government.
What follows are ten examples of the Deep State.
1 | Stay‑Behind Bureaucrats in the Executive Branch
From the Progressive Era forward, presidents have staffed agencies with loyalists who become career civil servants. Once embedded, they remain when administrations change. A 2019 Department of Justice Inspector General report revealed how senior FBI officials leveraged confidential informants and secret warrants during Crossfire Hurricane to surveil a presidential campaign, bypassing normal oversight.2
Internal messages released under FOIA show agents vowing to “stop” Donald Trump “at any cost,” illustrating how personal ideology can warp supposedly neutral institutions.3
2 | Congress & the Donor Class
Legislators decry foreign interference even as some cultivate it. In 2020 Rep. Eric Swalwell was briefed by the FBI for associating with suspected Chinese agent “Fang Fang.” Though the House Ethics Committee later dropped its probe, the incident exposed Beijing’s reach into U.S. politics.4
A 2024 OpenSecrets analysis found that defense contractors alone spent $140 million on congressional lobbying, purchasing an iron triangle of think‑tank reports, committee hearings, and carefully scripted sound‑bites.5
Meanwhile, longtime Senator Dianne Feinstein disclosed in 2018 that a trusted San Francisco staffer—including her personal driver for nearly two decades—had been investigated by the FBI as a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Though no charges were filed, the episode underscored Beijing’s patient cultivation of congressional influence and the vulnerability of senior lawmakers to foreign espionage.6
3 | The Judiciary’s Un‑Elected Legislators
Unlike Article III judges, thousands of administrative law judges and special masters wield quasi‑legislative power inside agencies. Their rule‑makings often stand for decades before any court review, effectively writing law without a single vote cast. The Supreme Court’s Chevron deference (1984) elevated these technocrats, but its impending revision highlights the danger of rule by experts rather than representatives.7
4 | Federal Policing & January 6
Questions linger about the scope of federal involvement in the 2021 Capitol unrest. A 2025 Senate intelligence brief confirmed at least 26 FBI informants were present in Washington that day, though the Bureau insists none were instructed to enter the Capitol.8 Meanwhile the pipe‑bomber who placed devices near party headquarters on January 5 remains unidentified despite unprecedented surveillance assets.9
Senate testimony also disclosed a tactical cell of Department of Homeland Security agents embedding with protest groups months before the rally—a revelation strangely absent from most major outlets.10
5 | “We Penetrate the Cabinets” — Foreign Influence
World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab boasted in 2017 that his Young Global Leaders program had “penetrated the cabinets” of numerous governments—claiming that over half of Canada’s ministers were WEF alumni.11
Such admissions reveal how trans‑national networks seed loyal operatives inside sovereign states, echoing ancient Babylon’s strategy of appointing satraps to keep regions in line. The same pattern appears in American agencies where policy fellows from global NGOs rotate through deputy posts, then return to write the white‑papers that justify the very regulations they helped craft.
6 | Central Banking without Consent
The Federal Reserve System, created in 1913, operates “independent within the government” yet outside direct voter control.12 Its monetary experiments—zero‑rate bubbles and sudden contractions—redistribute wealth toward financial elites while Main Street endures boom‑bust cycles. Former Fed Chair Ben Bernanke admitted in 2022 that quantitative‑easing policy “unavoidably” widens the wealth gap, a confession that landed with little media scrutiny.13
7 | Autopen Rule & Executive Overreach
Recent reporting alleges extensive White House use of an autopen to sign executive actions and even pardons without the President’s direct hand—mechanizing authority behind closed doors.14 When the very signature of the Chief Magistrate can be outsourced to a machine, the republic’s formal safeguards hang by a thread.
8 | Propaganda & Media Collusion
The Twitter Files released in 2022 showed former FBI and DHS officials directing content moderation at a private platform to silence dissent on pandemic policy and election integrity.15 Email chains revealed an “iterative partnership” wherein government actors flagged “misinformation” for rapid removal—a modern echo of Nebuchadnezzar’s herald commanding the populace to bow.
Legacy outlets, dependent on pharma and defense advertising, dutifully amplify the Deep State’s chosen narratives, branding whistle‑blowers as extremists until the next leak proves them true. The media then pen small back-page retractions later to "maintain" their journalistic credibility.
9 | Lawfare and Judicial Weaponization
From the unprecedented raid on a former president’s personal residence to the use of centuries‑old statutes against pro‑life protesters, federal prosecutors increasingly blur the line between justice and policy. A 2023 Government Accountability Office audit found that 78 percent of politically sensitive cases targeted conservative or populist figures.16 Selective prosecution is itself a silent coup, bending the sword of state toward ideological ends.
10 | Digital Censorship & Disinformation Boards
In 2022 the Department of Homeland Security announced a Disinformation Governance Board aimed at policing “malinformation”—true facts presented without the approved framing.17 Public outcry shelved the project, but leaked memos show the architecture was merely re‑branded and distributed among existing task‑forces. Digital censorship is Babylon’s tower—centralized, lofty, and ultimately destined for collapse.
Divide and Conquer: The Left–Right Paradigm
Bright red counties clash against deep blue precincts on every election‑night map, a visual shorthand for an America allegedly torn in two. Cable panels feed the spectacle with hourly outrage: left versus right, progressive versus conservative, donkey versus elephant. Each tribe is assured that the other represents an existential threat to “our democracy.” But beneath the shouting lies an uncomfortable truth— Babylon’s agents thrive on the very discord they manufacture.
For over a century the Deep State has cultivated this partisan theater as the perfect smokescreen. When public attention is fixed on Supreme Court nominations or the latest culture‑war skirmish, regulatory czars quietly finalize rules that re‑wire whole industries. While talking‑heads argue about mean tweets, multinational contractors collect no‑bid security contracts and central bankers extend another trillion in liquidity to favored firms. The iron law is simple: keep the herd fighting and they will not notice the prison bars being built around them.
Both parties provide convenient ideological storefronts for policies the permanent bureaucracy already prefers. For instance, a war‑weary electorate in 2012 is offered “humanitarian intervention” by liberals and “counter‑terror strikes” by conservatives—but the bombs fall regardless. Fiscal hawks denounce deficits from the minority benches, then rubber‑stamp omnibus spending once in power; social justice champions rail against surveillance until their own leaders occupy the Situation Room. The narrative pendulum swings, yet the unelected machinery behind it remains. The agents of Babylon have both R's and D's next to their names.
Social media amplifies the divide, rewarding outrage with virality. Algorithms funnel citizens into echo chambers, each convinced that only total victory will avert national ruin. Yet the data collectors who design those algorithms enjoy bipartisan subsidies and carve‑outs. Babylon’s architects understand that a populace locked in mutual suspicion will beg for technocratic referees—precisely the role the Deep State is eager to play. News websites use targeting software to show a different story depending on your political leanings to sow division and discord.18
The tragedy is not merely political; it is spiritual. When Christians adopt partisan hostility as a core identity, they risk forgetting that our true citizenship is in heaven. Babylon wants believers to equate the Kingdom of God with the triumph of a party platform. But Jesus is neither Republican nor Democrat; He called both zealots and tax‑collectors into the same fellowship. Only a Church that transcends the false left‑right binary paradigm can expose the deeper corruption that unites today’s Herods and Caesars under one imperial banner.
Before you make your decision about the Deep State based on your political affiliation, know that there is ample evidence of its existence.19 Much of the proof has been cited in this essay, but more exists than the scope of this essay could provide. Mainstream news organizations spent the first few years of the Trump presidency claiming it didn’t exist and that it was a “conspiracy theory”, now they admit that it does exist but now are making the argument that it should. 20
Ask yourself these questions: Is there a Deep state? If so, (it does) does the Deep State have my best interest or the nation’s best interest in mind? I suggest you find out.
A Christian Response: Watchmen on the Walls
Scripture commands believers to “be subject to the governing authorities” (Romans 13:1‑2) while also serving as watchmen who expose “the unfruitful works of darkness” (Ephesians 5:11). Our duty is four‑fold:
Intercede – “If My people… will humble themselves and pray… I will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Pray daily for righteous leadership.
Inform – Study primary documents, attend local meetings, and resist propaganda with verified truth (Proverbs 18:17).
Involve – Serve on school boards, run for office, or simply vote in every election; self‑government dies when good men do nothing (Proverbs 29:2).
Inspire – Model kingdom citizenship by honoring just laws while peacefully resisting tyranny, following in the footsteps of the apostles who said, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).
Conclusion
Absalom’s conspiracy collapsed when courageous priests smuggled truth to King David and Joab sounded the trumpet. In like manner, the modern Deep State will falter when citizens reclaim their constitutional role, insist on transparency, and anchor their hope not in princes but in the Lord. The battle is spiritual before it is political; yet history turns on the faithfulness of ordinary saints who refuse to trade liberty for the comfort of Babylon’s chains.
Father in Heaven, You who raise up kings and bring them down, search my heart today. I confess that I have too often traded eternal vigilance for passing comfort, allowing unelected powers to steer the nation You entrusted to “We the People.” Forgive my apathy and loosen every tie to complacency. Flood me with the courage of Daniel, who served monarchs without bowing to their idols, and the insight of Esther, who spoke truth within the palace for such a time as this. Ignite holy discernment to recognize false counsel, resilience to endure ridicule, and humility to submit to righteous authority while resisting the schemes of Babylon.
Grant wisdom to our elected servants; expose corruption in every hidden office; protect honest whistle‑blowers who shine Your light in dark corridors. Teach us to wield the weapons of the Spirit—fervent prayer, unshakable joy, sacrificial service, steadfast love—in place of cynicism or despair. Let churches become lighthouses where citizenship is practiced in hope, families are fortified in truth, and communities learn the beauty of self‑governance under Christ.
May Your people rise as watchmen, shepherding communities in grace and boldness until the kingdoms of this world become the Kingdom of our God and of His Christ. Strengthen us to stand, having done all, to stand—undaunted, unbought, and unbowed. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
